GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - JULY 2000

NORTHEAST PACIFIC (NEP) - North Pacific Ocean East of Longitude 180

NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for Northeast Pacific
Basin tropical cyclones is based upon operational advisories
from the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center
in Miami, Florida, for systems east of Longitude 140W; and
from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center, Honolulu, Hawaii,
for systems west of Longitude 140W. The MSW are based on a
1-min averaging period, which is used by all U.S. civilian
and military weather services for tropical cyclone warnings.
A special thanks is due John Wallace of San Antonio, Texas,
for constructing the middle portion of Upana-Chanchu's track
during the time the disturbance was not in warning status.

Note: Between 24/1200 UTC and 26/0600 UTC the track was generated by
simple interpolation between the final CPHC warning on Upana at 24/0600
UTC and the first entry in the JMV file for Chanchu at 26/1200 UTC.
It is likely that there was no real LLCC during this interval--the track
is simply included for the sake of continuity. Several persons
followed the post-Upana/pre-Chanchu disturbance and were of the opinion
that Chanchu was a redevelopment of Upana: John Wallace, Eric Blake,
and Mark Lander (most insistently).

NORTHWEST PACIFIC (NWP) - North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180

NOTE: The tracking information for Northwest Pacific Basin tropical
cyclones is based primarily upon operational warnings from the
Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Comparisons were made with track coordinates
given in advisories from the meteorological services of Japan
(JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever the
center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an
entry was made in the Remarks column.

The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the
10-min avg MSW were obtained from PAGASA's advisories if the
storm was in PAGASA's area of responsibility; otherwise, they
were gleaned from JMA's advisories or high seas forecasts. In
       a few cases the 10-min MSW given by PAGASA and JMA did not agree;
in those cases I reported the higher value. The estimates of
central pressure were obtained from JMA's advisories.

Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon 2000 webpage sent me the
PAGASA and JMA tracks for these systems--a special thanks to
       Michael for his assistance.

The first system, which I have dubbed with the Greek letter
"Kappa", was a small, TUTT-spawned system early in the month
which Dr. Mark Lander felt reached minimal tropical storm
intensity. To the author's knowledge, no warnings on this
system were issued by any agency. A special thanks to Mark for
providing me with a track for the cyclone.

Note: Normally I include the higher of the 10-min avg MSW from PAGASA or
JMA when they are not identical. However, in this case, from 07/1200 UTC
to 09/0000 UTC, PAGASA's 10-min avg MSW was higher, reaching 90 kts from
07/1200 UTC to 08/0000 UTC. Since this was considerably higher than even
JTWC's 1-min avg MSW, I decided to report JMA's values.

Note: JTWC did not initiate warnings on this system until 13/0000 UTC.
Prior to that time I have followed PAGASA's track for the most part since
it correlates fairly well with JTWC's first position. There was
considerable divergence between JMA's and PAGASA's coordinates during the
first half of the depression's life (which isn't unusual for weak,
ill-defined systems). However, after 13/0600 UTC there was better
agreement between JMA and JTWC, so I have included PAGASA's track in the
Remarks column during this period. Depression crossed Luzon between
14/0600 UTC and 1800 UTC.

Note: JMA's position at 24/1800 UTC was 21.0 N, 124.0 E, somewhat
different from both PAGASA's and JTWC's. System was treated as two
separate depressions by JTWC, but PAGASA considered it to be one
system. Mark Lander informed me that he and Roger Edson also believe
that Bolaven was a continuation of TD-10W.
