Hi Jacob
I'm up in Padbury and was watching the storms for most of the night. I
decided to get the video camera out and managed to capture some good
footage. I woke up at 6:00 and there was still thunder and lightning
everywhere.

P.S. If you have access to the radar service, could you please send me the
images from roughly 6:00 to 8:00. If not, can anyone else who reads this who
has radar please send them to me

Michael, when you sort out the best way to take video of lightening,
could you please describe the successful technique to the group.
With the camera that I have, one can control all aspects of exposure.
I have used this to get very credible video of fireworks. I'm hoping
for some hints on how to get lightening in both daylight and nighttime
properly rendered on video.

I can chase to 5pm, which effectively rules out such a long trip.
If this area was clear of the total cloud cover that is now over Wollongong,
it will fire big time. I doubt we will get a storm in Wollongong today
unless something happens, it is cool, overcast with light rain. Best chance
is perhaps a squall line developing somewhere to the west in clearer skies,
but this is remote. There may also be some embedded Cb in the cloud, but it
will not be severe.
Lets hope I am wrong.

Perth expects more severe weather
Tuesday 15 December, 1998 (11:19am AEDT)
Perth is bracing itself for more severe weather this morning, after
thunderstorms left a trail of damage in the metropolitan area during the
night.
Lightning strikes have kept emergency services busy and claimed the
lives of an apprentice jockey and a horse at Ascot racecourse.
Apprentice Damien Beckett and his mount, Brave Buck, were going through
their paces at a pre-dawn training routine when lightning struck.
Trainer Frank Maynard says described what happened: "He was out warming
up in the middle of the track.
"It was sort of cleared up and then all of a sudden it came in dark,
very heavy and there was a little bit of thunder and the next thing,
there was just this one hell of a bloody crack [of thunder]."
The State Emergency Service says homes in Perth's inner-southern suburbs
have been the worst hit, with trees falling onto roofs and some flood
damage.
Line crews have worked through the night restoring power to suburbs from
Gosnells in the south to Hillaries in the north.
Many suburbs are still without power.
The Fire and Rescue Service took four times the usual number of calls
for assistance between six o'clock last night and two o'clock this
morning.
More storms are on the way with the weather bureau warning of severe
thunderstorms, strong, squally winds and flash flooding, mainly over the
northern suburbs.
Residents are urged to secure loose items and move their vehicles under
cover.

What a night in Perth, the first storms were felt in the southern suburbs,
at about 7pm last night, then new storms developed, and one went through
the whole metro area at about 11:30pm, by about 12:30am the lightning had
finished and it seemed quite clear to the W and NW, you were able to see a
few stars, but by 1:30am, more storms came accross from the NW again, and
this stayed around for almost the whole night, up untill about 7:30am.
Its 10:30am WST now, its 30.8C, 17.5C dp, NE wind at 19km/h, its quite dark
again to the NW.

Howdy all after a very interesting chase to the NT. Yeah we saw heaps of
stroms, but none near us BUT we experienced the edge of the worst TC that
Darwin BOM has ever experienced with winds packing 320km/h at the top of
the scale. I have read with interest the American "ours is bigger than
yours theory?" and agree that as yet Australia doesnot have a data
reporting ability for TC's - they have developed a aerosonde plane (remote
controlled) that can fly into these beauties, but was not ready for TC
Thelma. The way that Darwin BOm got itas readings was by Doppler radar
situated at the Northern Tip of Darwin. As you would agree Doppler radar is
very accurate. We expereinced wind gusts of bet 150 km/h - 175 km/h, with
torential rain (near us recorded 774mm in 2 days). I will put more on about
the trip as soon as can. Howdy to all , esp Matthew, Greg & Nick. For the

experiemnced in WA yet? Just heard on the radio that a Jockey & Horse were
killed this morning while practicing, when hit by lightning!

Hi STeve! Hows it goin? Yep, currently working in Maclean for 2 weeks, and
staying at Yamba overlooking the beach ( so Im hoping for some great storms
tonight......got my camera gear in the car!!)

Interesting. there must still be allot of activity in this trough at the
moment. You said the storms eased off around 7:30am. At the moment (11:55am)
I can see a large storm which is currently fairly active in the way of
lightning and heavy rain about 10 km north of my house here in Padbury. I
must say, I think this series of storms has allot more life in them

Hi Paul
I live about 20 km north of Perth. Although we didn't cop the full force of
the storms up here, there was lightning going almost all night. Like you
said, the jockey was struck and died on the way to hospital. The storm took
out power lines, and even burnt down a house. I just saw some footage on a
newsbreak and they showed numerous houses with tree's down all over the
lawn. Keep an eye on the news tonight and they should give more details.
There is also a Severe Thunderstorm Advice current for most of the South
West corner of WA

Yeah, I live very close to Padbury, and these fresh storms have developed
quite quickly, thunder is getting louder, dew points at the 11:30am obs
were very high for Perth, the dew point was 21.9C, and the temp was at 30.6C.
The trough is expected to move inland tonight, so fresh storms may keep
deveoloping around Perth until then.

Wow! All these north coast or Maclean types around - born and raised in
Maclean here - still go up for every holiday I get the chance to - always
reckoned we had interesting weather up there but used to hate how you
could see the weather coming down the valley from the northwest and would
hit the hills on the island across the river and immediately divert up
that arm and miss us in Maclean
However I do remember one massive hailstorm up there around 1964 which
broke nearly every window in town - stripped trees and all sorts of good
stuff.

Issued at 1802 on Tuesday the 15th of December 1998 for the Northeast

Thunderstorms, with possible severe wind gusts, large hail and locally

Melbourne radar at 6pm shows a severe storm near Yarrawonga moving
eastsoutheast
at 35km/h.
If storms approach people are advised to move cars under cover and stay
indoors
until the storms have passed. Driving conditions may be hazardous.
This Advice is valid until midnight and should not be used after this
time.

Hi all,
Well, lightning tracker shows a line of storms from NW of Dalby down to
Warwick and Stanthorpe - actually the new data just came in and there's
no whites (new strikes) near Warwick, but further south to Stanthorpe
there is. The soundings were actually attrocious for us today, but
maybe since these storms have already formed, it they might survive.
There are 89 new CG's now - it's generally fluctuating but at the
moment, the trend appears to be decreasing slightly :-( There's a lot
of cirrus in the sky to the west - which would be waste cirrus from old
anvils, as well as Cirro-cu, Alto-cu, and some small Cu tuffs around in
the sky. There's a chance Brisbane might light up tonight! The models
appear to be indicating some action for us tomorrow and Thursday, so I'm
looking forward to seeing what they'll bring us - although it does look
better to the west of us! I'm happy to see storms in NE NSW and to te
west of us today, because it means some fairly good storm conditions
should be coming our way.

A man interviewed in perth about the rescent storms on the news tonight
mentioned a tornado "or something similar" briefly touched down.It was
channel 7 news in sydney.Thats pretty much all they said about it,they were
to busy showing off the lightning and tree damage.

Hi All,
Storm now passed with no visible damage. Sky and surrounds have
a strange orange glow as sunset coming through thin cloud base. Clear
sunset visible in western sky in distance.
If any body wants to watch storms around Orange a good vantage
point here to see storms is Mt Canoblas. 1300 metres (4100ft) high with
a good 360 degree view for many kilometres.

Had a few people ask about this.
I use a simple device called a " snappy " it plugs into the printer port,
you then simply run a cable from the video camera output to the snappy and "
snap " away on frames you like. The biggest downfall of the snappy is you
get a black and white preview on the PC screen that is 1-2 frames behind the
camera, by the time you react its more like 4-5 frames. This is really
showed out when you try to capture a lightning strike, it can take 20-30
attempts, what you have to remember is that lightning pulses, so many of the
lightning shot frames are in between pulses. There are other video capture
devices that will capture frames, then you select which frame you want, but
I cannot speak for the quality.
PROS / CONS
* Photos are still far better in terms of clarity, especially bigger than
320 pixels. There is no contest here.
* Video stills are best limited to 320 x 200 pixels.
* Video stills have perfect colour reproduction, it really highlights how
pathetic some photo labs are when you compare a photo vs still of same
subject.
* Video is convenient, unlimited shots !!!
* Video stills have a handy date / time stamp.
* Video stills of nighttime lightning are very poor.
* However, video stills of poorly lit daytime shots are easier to obtain
than by camera ( IE shots when camera wants below 60th of second, )
TIPS FOR BETTER STILLS
* Find the focus lock control and use it all the time when taking weather
stuff. ( locked on infinity )
* Find the exposure lock, point the camera at the sky ( fill viewfinder )
and lock the exposure on the sky. Now you can point your camera anywhere and
get the sky exposed right, of course if its the cows in the paddock you want
you will have to unlock.
* Hi 8 and Super VHS/C give better results. But you can still get reasonable
shots from ordinary 8mm ( see http://thunder.simplenet.com/travel/across.htm
for video stills from standard older camera.
* If you see a scene that you know you will be wanting a still off, hold the
camera steady on it for 3-5 secs, try not to move a muscle ( or use a
tripod ).
* As I said above I have not had too good a results with lightning at night,
the video may look OK, but the stills are grainy.

There were no tornadoes in Perth that i the BOM or the SES know of. The
storms were good but mositure based and were never going to produce
tornadoes. The damage was from downdraughts.
