 yeah i noticed this as well.. was watching all day in anticipation for
something, late afternoon large clouds were present, but they all turned
into nothing...was quiet dissapointed.

Hi Matt and all,

The meteor shower is going to be early on Wednesday morning for 1 and a half
hours. It starts for us Western Australians at between 2.30 and 3.00 am and
runs till about 4.30am. The peak being in the middle of that time. You will
need to look towards the North East.
I will be travelling away from the lights of Perth. Anyone from Perth is
welcome to come weather permitting. Though you will be able to see it in the
city it will look much better in the dark.

Great Mail Jimmy...On Forecasting...I use all information available
including BoM calls. My primary interest is the precision of
forecasting models and the value they offer to predicting a good
weekend - whether picnicing, surfing, skiing, working around the
house, holding parties or storm-chasing...While I find the macro-scale
of forecasting OK, the regional and more timely scale of forecasting
is subject to a great deal of imprecision, particularly when we are

I enquired about the quality of the radar to BoM, as I was interested to see what they offered for their unbelievably high price A day later got two  replied messages. 
One gave me quicktime sample which was more like a demo thing. The second was from another person in the bureau who said my request was the first of it's kind since the service was made available. Then he gave me the access codes for the last week of october, and told me that if I was to get the service to personally contact him on a phone number. 
THe week that I had it there was no action, except for a couple of storms in the top end, and at Alice Springs.

A member of the bureau spoke to someone on 2UE ( I think John Stanely??) and he was talking about throwing open the access so everyone could have the ability to see what weather, if dangerous, was coming.
I think this was last tuesday, after the storms that hit Sydney saturday night.

On Friday evening I was heading west over the blue mountains, along bells
line of road. Behind me, in the sydney area I saw a large cumulus with a
nice looking anvil.  I first observed it a bit after 5pm. 
Now for the interesting part. A bit later i noticed what looked like a
bulge above the anvil. By this stage it was partly obscured by small cumulus.
It was still in view up till about 6:30-7:00, when i was heading north
along the road to mudgee. after that, mountains got in the way. But by then
i could see a nice line of storms to the north east, probably over the
upper hunter valley. These storms produced a good lightning display well
into the night.

yeah i was all confused about it aswell, but when you hear or read
somewhere that says tuesday morning, they mean for american or other places
on earth which is wednesday morning in australia. 5 am wednesday morning
(qld time) is when us eastern states will be face on to the debris. but by
that time, the sun has risen!!:( but should still get a heaps good view!!

There were severe warnings out on both these. The Sydney one has been
documented by Michael B and Jimmy, and from 70km myself. The Hunter Valley
one produced hail, although from your angle you may well have been seeing
the ones near Scone that were not severe ( well i presume so ).

Well i heard on TV tonight that the meteor shower would be on thursday the
17th between 2:30am and 6:00am Brisbane Time.  I have heard a few different
times , although this was from our local weather presenter, so i'm thinking
it is most probably the correct one.

I like the cloud developing in Central Qld. This is normally an indication
of a trough and I hope it can maintain itself and move slowly across
deepening in the process.

Trough lines and troughs are my favourite storm producers with often severe
weather associated with them somewhere.

Sydney meet? 
How about it, i got the next 2 days off so staying up late is no problem
for me at all... we could do the meet at rooty hill thing at 9-10pm and
then if someone knows a nice vantage point somewhere with not many lights
around we could drive there or whatever...
just an idea...
