Grafton Ebor Armidale Glen Innes Jackadgery Storm Chase and Drive: Sunday 31st December 2006 by Michael Bath |
A marginal day for storms with nothing expected in the Northern Rivers but some likely on the Northern Tablelands.
Decided on a national park visit / long drive / maybe storm chase trip with Rodney Wallbridge. Took the Pacific Highway to Grafton then to Ebor via Nymboida. Stopped at Mount Hyland Nature Reserve, Ebor Falls, Point Lookout then Cathedral Rock National Park. Cumulus congestus and some showers developing by this stage, and persisting.
Drive became a storm chase on the Ebor Guyra Road with a cell east northeast of Armidale. We drove into this and copped torrential rain and some very small hail. It was very cold - only about 12 degrees but the storm as giving off quite a bit of lightning.
Drive continued along back roads east of Guyra and Glen Innes, then back east along the Gwydir Highway to Grafton.
Another storm was observed from within the Gibraltar Range National Park and then at Jackadgery later afternoon / early evening.
