Monthly Global Tropical Cyclone Tracks September 2000 [Summaries and Track Data] [Prepared by Gary Padgett] |
GLOBAL TROPICAL CYCLONE TRACKS - SEPTEMBER 2000 ATLANTIC (ATL) - North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico NOTE: The tracking and intensity information for Atlantic Basin tropical cyclones is based upon operational advisories from the Tropical Prediction Center/National Hurricane Center, located in Miami, Florida, USA. The MSW are based on a 1-min averaging period, which is used by all U.S. civilian and military weather services for tropical cyclone warnings. A special thanks to John Wallace of San Antonio, Texas, for compiling a rough track for TD-12 (pre-Helene) for the period when warnings were temporarily dropped as the depression weakened upon entering the Caribbean Sea. Also, a special thanks to to David Roth of HPC for sending me a track for the subtropical portion of Helene's life after the storm emerged back out over the open Atlantic Ocean. obtained by John Wallace from the Tropical Weather Discussions issued by TPC/NHC in which the general coordinates of the weak LOW were usually given. However, for 0000, 0600, and 1200 UTC on 17 Sep, there was apparently no surface circulation and the longitude represents the location of the wave axis with the latitude being interpolated between the 16/1800 and 17/1800 UTC positions. Note #2: The assessment of Helene as a subtropical storm as it exited the North Carolina coast was made by David Roth. Eric Blake has informed me that for the official Best Track Helene will likely be reclassified as a tropical storm as it re-emerged into the Atlantic . The sudden intensification on 25 Sep is based on at least two ship reports. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: ISAAC Cyclone Number: 13 Basin: ATL Comparisons were made with track coordinates given in advisories from the meteorological services of Japan (JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever the center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an entry was made in the Remarks column. The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the 10-min avg MSW were obtained from PAGASA's advisories if the storm were in PAGASA's area of responsibility; otherwise, they were gleaned from JMA's advisories or high seas forecasts. In a few cases the 10-min MSW given by PAGASA and JMA did not agree; in those cases I reported the higher value. The estimates of central pressure were obtained from JMA's advisories. Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon 2000 webpage sent me the PAGASA and JMA tracks for these systems--a special thanks to Michael for his assistance. A track is included for one system for which no warnings were issued by any official agency. This track was supplied by Dr. Mark Lander of the University of Guam, and I have allotted the Greek letter "Nu" to identify this system.
