************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* NORTHWEST PACIFIC (NWP) - North Pacific Ocean West of Longitude 180 NOTE: The tracking information for Northwest Pacific Basin tropical cyclones is based primarily upon operational warnings from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center of the U.S. Air Force and Navy at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Comparisons were made with track coordinates given in advisories from the meteorological services of Japan (JMA) and the Philippines (PAGASA). In general, whenever the center position differed by more than 40-50 nm from JTWC's, an entry was made in the Remarks column. The 1-min avg MSW were taken from the JTWC advisories while the 10-min avg MSW were obtained from PAGASA's advisories if the storm was in PAGASA's area of responsibility; otherwise, they were gleaned from JMA's advisories or high seas forecasts. In a few cases the 10-min MSW given by PAGASA and JMA did not agree; in those cases I reported the higher value. The estimates of central pressure were obtained from JMA's advisories. Michael V. Padua, owner of the Typhoon '99 webpage sent me the PAGASA and JMA tracks for these systems--a special thanks to Michael for his assistance. ************************************************************************* ************************************************************************* ADDITIONAL and ALTERNATE TRACKS for NORTHWEST PACIFIC BASIN TROPICAL CYCLONES This is a "first" in the series of Global Tropical Cyclone Tracks files which have been prepared by the author since October, 1997. Heretofore, I have always included just one track file for each cyclone, using the Remarks column to indicate significant differences in positions between JTWC and other warning agencies. During August, in the Northwest Pacific basin, the monsoon trough intruded to rather high latitudes, leading to a rather spectacular outbreak of small-scale convective cyclones. There was wide disagreement among satellite intensity estimates and the manner in which these systems were treated by JTWC and JMA. The tracks below were supplied by Dr. Mark Lander, a professor at the Water and Environmental Institute of the Pacific at the University of Guam. From 1988 to 1998, Dr. Lander (who earned his Doctorate from the University of Hawaii in 1986) was funded by the Office of Naval Research to conduct research on tropical cyclones. During much of this time Mark worked at JTWC alongside the forecasters and satellite analysts, helping them to decide what basic research could best help them solve some of the problems encountered in their day-to-day work. Three systems are included for which neither JTWC nor JMA issued any warnings. Following are alternate tracks prepared by Mark for Typhoons Tanya and Virgil and Tropical Depression 18W. In general Mark's intensities represent the most liberal estimates while JMA's are the most conversative and JTWC's more or less in the middle. It appears that part of the problem is that the widely-used Dvorak method of satellite analysis for tropical cyclones does not handle such midget systems well. A case in point--in late August in the Atlantic a midget tropical cyclone formed in the deep tropics--Tropical Storm Emily. The satellite signature on 24 Aug didn't look anything like a tropical storm, yet a reconnaissance flight found a tightly-wound midget tropical storm only 10 kts shy of hurricane force! It is the author's hope that by including these systems some qualified persons will conduct further studies of these small cyclones and other similar systems. In order to provide a distinctive identification for these storms since they were not assigned any name or number by any TCWC, I have chosen to designate them with letters of the Greek alphabet. The regular summary will have some more information on this. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: "ALPHA" Cyclone Number: None Basin: NWP/NEP (Special "best track" and intensity estimates provided by Mark Lander.) For weaker systems not in warning status by JTWC, information gleaned from the twice-daily issuances of the Indian Meteorological Depart- ment (IMD) was used to complete the tracks. These bulletins usually give analyzed center positions at either 0300 or 0600 UTC and 1200 or 1500 UTC. The MSW are based on a 1-min averaging period, which is used by all U.S. civilian and military weather services for tropical cyclone warnings. For synoptic observations in the North Indian region, both 10-min and 3-min average winds are employed, but IMD makes no attempt to modify the Dvorak scale for estimating tropical cyclone intensity; hence, a 1-min avg MSW is implied. In the North Indian basin JTWC usually does not initiate warnings until a system is well-organized and it is likely to attain tropical storm status within 48 hours. Windspeeds are usually not reported in the IMD bulletins. Systems are usually classified as depressions, deep depressions, or cyclonic storms. For depressions I assigned a MSW of 25 kts and for deep depressions 30 kts. If the early stages of a system were referred to as a low-pressure area, I assigned 20 kts. ************************************************************************* Storm Name: Tropical Depression Cyclone Number: None Basin: NIO Date Time Lat Lon Cent MSW MSW Remarks (GMT) Press 1-min 10-min (mb) (kts) (kts) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 99 AUG 06 1200 21.0 N 88.5 W 25 99 AUG 06 2100 21.0 N 88.5 W 25 99 AUG 07 1200 22.8 N 86.2 W 20 Inland 99 AUG 08 1200 22.5 N 83.0 W 15 " Note: The MSW estimates are my own, based upon the fact that IMD never called this system a "deep depression", which would imply 30-kt winds.
